Question 1

Does a gas fireplace need a sweep?

Accepted Answer

Gas fireplaces and furnaces still vent through a chimney or flue and should be checked, usually once a year.

Question 2

Can I clean my chimney myself?

Accepted Answer

Some people do, but a pro also inspects for cracks and blockages you may not see.

Question 3

How often should a chimney be cleaned?

Accepted Answer

Have it inspected at least once a year and cleaned when needed. That’s the national fire safety standard (NFPA 211). If you burn a lot of wood, you may need cleaning more often.

Question 4

What does creosote look like?

Accepted Answer

It’s a black or brown buildup inside the chimney. It can be flaky like soot, sticky like tar, or hard and shiny like glaze. The shiny kind is the hardest to remove and the most dangerous.

Question 5

Can I clean my own chimney?

Accepted Answer

You can with the right brushes, but a professional inspection can spot cracks and damage you can’t see. Many people do light cleaning themselves and still have a yearly inspection.

Question 6

Do gas fireplaces need chimney cleaning?

Accepted Answer

They still need a yearly check. Gas burns cleaner, but vents can get blocked by nests or debris, and that can push dangerous fumes into the house.

Question 7

What does a chimney fire sound like?

Accepted Answer

Many people say it sounds like a loud roar or a freight train, with popping or cracking and thick smoke. Get everyone out and call 911.

Question 8

How much does a chimney inspection cost?

Accepted Answer

Prices vary a lot by area. A basic inspection and sweep often costs a couple hundred dollars; a camera inspection or repairs cost more. Get written quotes.
