Getting a US driver’s license when you’re new
Each state’s DMV sets its own rules. Usually bring proof of identity, a Social Security number (or proof you’re not eligible), proof you live in the state and, in many states, immigration documents. Study the free handbook, then pass the vision, written and road tests; some states exchange licenses from certain countries. A REAL ID works for domestic flights; some states offer standard licenses for driving only. You’ll also need car insurance. Only the DMV issues real licenses.
Your checklist
- Check your state DMV’s document list
- Study the free driver handbook
- Pass the vision, written and road tests

Each state is different
Your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV, sometimes called another name) sets the rules. Start on its official website.
Documents
Usually:
- Proof of identity (like a passport).
- A Social Security number, or proof you’re not eligible for one.
- Proof you live in the state (lease, utility bill).
- In many states, documents showing lawful presence.
The tests
- Written knowledge test on road signs and laws. Many states offer it in several languages. Study the free driver handbook.
- Vision test.
- Road test, often after holding a learner’s permit and practicing.
Some states let you exchange a license from certain countries without all tests. A visitor may be able to drive temporarily with a foreign license; rules vary.
REAL ID vs standard
A REAL ID-compliant license can be used to board domestic flights and enter some federal buildings. Some states issue standard licenses to residents who can’t get a REAL ID; those allow driving but aren’t valid for federal purposes like flying.
Insurance
Almost every state requires car insurance to drive.
Avoid scams
Only your state DMV issues licenses. “Fast” or “guaranteed” licenses for sale are fake and can lead to serious legal trouble.
