Laid off: how to file for unemployment
Apply right away on your state’s official unemployment site, because benefits usually count from when you apply. Have your Social Security number, employers from about the last 18 months, dates and the reason the job ended. Being laid off through no fault of your own usually qualifies. Certify every week or two, keep a job search log, appeal a denial quickly, and consider tax withholding.

Apply right away
Each state runs its own unemployment program. Apply on your state’s official site as soon as you lose your job; benefits usually count from when you apply.
What you need
Your Social Security number, employers from about the last 18 months, start and end dates, pay, and the reason the job ended. Answer honestly.
Who qualifies
Generally, people who lost their job through no fault of their own and worked enough recently. Quitting or being fired for misconduct often doesn’t qualify, but each case is reviewed.
Keep it going
- Certify every week or two that you’re still unemployed and report any pay.
- Meet your state’s job search rules and keep a log.
- Some states have a one-week waiting period.
If you’re denied
Appeal by the deadline on your letter, which is often short. Keep certifying while you wait.
Taxes
Benefits are taxable income. You can usually have federal tax withheld.
Also handle
Health insurance: losing job coverage opens a special enrollment window, usually 60 days.
