Question 1

Is it better to get a big tax refund?

Accepted Answer

A big refund means you had extra taken out all year. Some people like it as forced savings; others prefer more money in each paycheck.

Question 2

Why did my paycheck change when nothing else did?

Accepted Answer

Common reasons are a new benefits year, a change in tax tables, hitting the Social Security yearly limit, or a different number of hours or pay days.

Question 3

What is FICA on my paycheck?

Accepted Answer

FICA is Social Security (6.2%) plus Medicare (1.45%), 7.65% in total for most employees. Your employer pays the same amount on top.

Question 4

How do I fill out a W-4 for my first job?

Accepted Answer

Most single people with one job can fill in their personal information, sign it, and skip the rest. If you have more than one job or a spouse who works, use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator.

Question 5

What is a 401(k) match?

Accepted Answer

Extra money your employer adds when you save, like 50 cents for each dollar up to a limit. Not getting the full match leaves money on the table.

Question 6

Why is my first paycheck smaller than the rest?

Accepted Answer

It often covers only the days you worked in that pay period, and some employers pay a period behind.

Question 7

What is the difference between pre-tax and after-tax deductions?

Accepted Answer

Pre-tax deductions, like most health insurance and traditional 401(k) savings, come out before income tax is figured, so you pay less tax. After-tax deductions don’t lower your taxes now.

Question 8

Do I have to pay state income tax?

Accepted Answer

It depends on your state. A few states have no income tax on wages, and some cities add their own.
